Andrew Lazarus continues upward growth in the hospitality industry
There is something encouraging and inspiring when you see someone who is very successful in business and life give back to the community. As they build their business and wealth, they still keep their feet on the ground by building up the people of the world around them.
Andrew Lazarus has done just that. A very successful businessman in the Australian hospitality industry, Lazarus has not only made significant contributions to various charities, he has also founded his own that is focused on engaging other businesses in the hospitality industry in contributing to their local communities.
But how did he get to where he is now? These are some of the more high-profile projects that Lazarus has worked on that have catapulted him to his successful status in the business world. These are some of the projects that have made his generous philanthropy possible.
Exchange Hotel in Hamilton
Eastern Hotels Group, under Lazarus’ watchful eye, acquired the Exchange Hotel in Hamilton in 2016, adding it to his own Zenith Hotels. Over the years it was somewhat successful, but in early 2020, he shut it down to do a complete renovation with the goal of making the venue a premier live music space in Newcastle.
The renovations repurposed the gaming and car park areas, turning them into a space for live music. The upstairs portion of the venue will have a cocktail bar and an exclusive VIP area. The hotel’s renovations carry a price tag that is upwards of $6 million.
Vaucluse Home
Mid-July 2018 saw the sale of the Vaucluse home of Andrew and Denise Lazarus for an impressive $8 million. The property was purchased off-market by Jordana Sharon-Zipser, wife of Roby Sharon-Zipser who is the co-founder and chief operating officer of Hi-Pages.
The home sits on a spacious 845 sq m block and features extensive outdoor entertainment areas that includes a self-contained guest house, cabana, and swimming pool. Inside the main house, there are five bedrooms and four baths.
The Lazarus family lived in the home on Olola Avenue for almost twenty years.
Macquarie Hotel
Lazarus picked up the Macquarie Hotel in Liverpool for a cool $25 million. His goal was to jump in on the development boom within the inner city of outer west Sidney. His quest to open a new pub in the area was realized.
It was in mid-renovations when he purchased it so that moved forward and more renovations are to come. It was already iconic, catering to the wealthy and well-to-do in the area, but has expanded to include more of the “regular joe” type in addition to Australia’s rich and famous.
Shoal Bay Country Club
Lazarus had his retirement project in his sights for some time before acquiring the object of those designs, the Shoal Bay Country Club. Situated on the water, the country club is definitely in a class by itself. He has transformed it into a family-friendly venue, giving it a completely different vibe than it had.
The club was traditionally patronized by men, but Lazarus saw value in expanding his customer demographic to include families. He wanted the site to appeal to everyone in the area over a broader age range. And that is just what he did.
Beach Hotel in Merewether
The Newcastle hotel, known locally as The Beaches became one of Lazarus’ properties when the Eastern Hotels Group purchased it in late 2019. It was owned previously by the Twohill and Bale families but it was time for a change.
Lazarus was drawn to the iconic hotel’s location. It is situated on the beach and is Newcastle’s only beachside pub. The two-story hotel offers stunning views of the beach but the hotel’s stellar reputation is the main attraction making it well worth the undisclosed multi-million price tag.
