Choosing Between Common Types of Sectionals

Date:

Have you decided it would be nice to have the additional seating made possible by sectionals? If it has been some time since you were in a furniture store you might be surprised at how many options there are.

While traditional sectional sofas offered an L-shaped format for typical sofa seats are still around, they aren’t the most popular. Here are the three most common types of sectionals.

Traditional sectional sofas with added cubes

Many traditional furniture collections that include sectionals have some flexibility to make it as large or small as you need. In addition to the 2 main pieces of the L-shaped sofa, you can also purchase one seat cubes to further extend one side or the other. Creating a U-shaped seating area is very simple with this sectional option, which can allow for even more seating for parties and conversation.

Some optional cubes offer not just additional seating, but surface space as well. Cupholders or other features may fold down from the back of the seat, or the cube may only contain surface space without seating.

However, seamlessly incorporating surface space in this way eliminates the need for an additional cocktail or accent tables that simply take up walk space in your living room.

Traditional sectionals with a twist – the chaise

Having a chaise for gentle, comfortable lounging is very tempting, but you don’t have to purchase a separate piece of furniture. Many furniture collections now offer sectionals that include a chaise as part or all of the L on one side. With the additional cubes available to add seats, the chaise is the perfect addition for a U-shaped seating area.

If you have children, the chaise can be an especially helpful feature. Most of the chaise sides of sectionals are large enough for a small child to fully lay down comfortably, which can be very helpful during socialization.

Modular sectionals are the new thing

Modular sectionals have been around for a bit, but they are really just starting to become more popular and more accessible. A modular sectional is made up of many pieces, some with backs, some without. You can purchase as many cubes of different types as you want. This allows for truly customized seating arrangements.

These sectional sofas are very appealing to those who like to redecorate or rearrange furniture frequently. It is also a great solution for those who entertain, giving you the ability to adapt your sofa to the needs of the occasion. Some modular sofas can be arranged in a dozen different ways, or more.

This is by far the most flexible of the sectional seating options. But if you would rather leave your family or living room as it sits for long periods, or if you don’t need the extra seating, you might want to skip the modular sofa and look for more traditional sectionals.

If you are interested in these or other types of sectionals, shop furniture stores online to get a better idea of your options.
