Stephen Breyer speaks out about Clarence Thomas’ health

Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, on Friday night after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He has undergone tests, has been diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are in remission, he is resting comfortably and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a day or two.. ”

However, after a few days of coming and going with no updates, people started to wonder what was going on; Although SCOTUS initially said that Justice Thomas would be released within days, no updates were given until Wednesday, five days after the original hospitalization story broke.

Is AP report on Wednesday’s statement by the Supreme Court:

The Supreme Court declined to say on Wednesday whether 73-year-old Justice Clarence Thomas was still in hospital, though he was expected to be released Tuesday night.

It added that:

The court heard arguments Wednesday morning and Chief Justice John Roberts said, as he has done for the past two days, that while Thomas was not present, he would participate in the case by reviewing the transcript and summary of arguments. Roberts said that Thomas “couldn’t be present today” without explanation.

Well, now Justice Stephen Breyer has spoken out about Justice Thomas’ health amid the rumors swirling around the situation. Newsweek, reporting on the update given by Justice Breyer and the court, has this to To speak:

SUpreme Court Judge Stephen Breyer said his colleague, Judge Clarence Thomas, was not in danger after being hospitalized with an infection last week.

TMZ reported on Thursday that Breyer said the 73-year-old Supreme Court Justice was fine, just a week after he was hospitalized on March 18, after he experienced flu-like symptoms.

Later, a Twitter account affiliated with the Supreme Court, the Twitter blog, announced that Thomas had been released, saying:

judgment: Clarence Thomas was discharged from hospital today, the Supreme Court said. The court did not provide further information.

So while many are worried about what has happened to Justice Thomas since no reports have been made on how he is doing, if Justice Breyer is to be believed then Justice Thomas is fine and is recovering.

What is not clear is why the court does not appear to be fond of details, especially when there is so much speculation when details are scarce. Newsweek, supplementing its reports on Breyer’s statement with a note about the widespread speculation on Twitter that may have sparked it, Note that:

A tweet went viral on Wednesday saying he was “very ill” and had to be on a ventilator in the hospital. The tweet has now been deleted and there is no evidence to support its claims.

So hopefully Justice Breyer’s statement calms down speculation regarding such and more importantly, hopefully it’s true and Justice Thomas is recovering.
