The recent controversy on transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has made quite the headlines, as a recent win of hers at the NCAA championships took the world by storm. Several athletes, coaches, parents and individuals alike felt that Thomas was given an unfair victory, saying that she had an “inherent unfair advantage”.
Several celebrities, including Caitlyn Jenner have called out the unfairness of the situation and have denounced Thomas‘ victory. Several fellow competitors wrote a letter to the governing body of the NCAA in order to help solve this issue, since they felt this to be a jeopardy to women’s sport.

Lia Thomas was born in 1998 to her parents Bob Thomas and Carrie Thomas. Thomas was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and began swimming at the age of just 5. Thomas competed for Westlake High School in the state high school swimming championships.
Both her and her brother attend the University of Pennsylvania. As a sophomore, Thomas competed in the men’s 500m, 1000m, and 1650m freestyle events at the Ivy League championships. After getting caught up in recent controversy, Thomas said that she transitioned to feel good for herself, and not to win championships.
